In Memory of László A. Vaskovics (1936–2026)
It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to László A. Vaskovics, who passed away on September 19, 2026, at the age of 90.
Vaskovics was one of the defining figures of (empirical) family sociology in the German-speaking world. As the founder of the Journal of Family Research, he gave an entire community of scholars a home, and his impact reaches far beyond his scholarly contributions to family, and social research. He was a visionary who did not merely conceive of new ideas but pursued them with unwavering persistence, and a true friend to people, who devoted himself wholeheartedly to his colleagues and staff.
His life's path, from the upheavals of 1956 through Vienna to Bamberg, was itself a piece of European contemporary history. What remains is a remarkable scholarly legacy and the memory of a man who always understood scholarship as a shared, collective endeavor.
Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. We will honor his memory.
